Discovering a breast lump can be concerning, but not every lump indicates a serious condition. Many breast lumps are benign, including fluid-filled cysts and noncancerous growths. At URPrecious Imaging in Chandler, AZ, we use advanced breast imaging to help patients better understand changes in their breast tissue. Breast ultrasound is particularly useful for determining whether a lump is a cyst or a solid mass.
A breast lump is a general term for an area of tissue that feels different from the surrounding breast. Lumps can vary in size, shape, and texture, and some may cause tenderness or discomfort.
A breast cyst is a fluid-filled sac that develops within breast tissue. Cysts are typically benign and may change in size due to hormonal fluctuations. Other breast lumps may consist of solid tissue, such as fibroadenomas, which are also commonly benign.
Because cysts and solid masses can feel similar during a physical examination, imaging is often necessary to distinguish between them.
Breast ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of structures within the breast. Unlike mammography, ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation.
During an ultrasound examination, we evaluate several characteristics to better understand a breast lump:
Fluid Content: Simple cysts appear fluid-filled, while solid masses have tissue within them.
Shape and Borders: Smooth, well-defined borders often suggest benign findings, while irregular features may require further evaluation.
Internal Structure: Ultrasound helps identify whether a mass contains fluid, solid tissue, or a combination of both.
Blood Flow: Doppler ultrasound can assess blood flow within certain masses, providing additional diagnostic information.
Size and Location: Imaging allows us to document a lump's measurements and position for comparison during future examinations.
These findings help our radiologist determine whether a lump appears benign or needs additional investigation.
Breast ultrasound may be recommended when a patient discovers a new lump, experiences localized breast discomfort, or receives an abnormal mammogram result.
It is also useful for evaluating certain findings in dense breast tissue, where abnormalities may be harder to distinguish on mammography.
At our Chandler imaging center, we emphasize personalized breast imaging based on each patient's symptoms, medical history, and clinical needs.
The next steps depend on the ultrasound findings. If imaging confirms a simple cyst with typical benign characteristics, additional testing may not be necessary.
Some findings require follow-up imaging to monitor changes over time. If a mass has suspicious features or cannot be confidently classified, further diagnostic imaging or a biopsy may be recommended.
Although ultrasound provides valuable information, it cannot determine whether every solid mass is cancerous or benign. It also does not replace recommended mammography screening. Patients should have any new or persistent breast lump evaluated by their healthcare provider, even when imaging results appear normal.
